Why Build a Robot Cat?

by Aidee Ladnier

Thank you so much, Lane, for hosting me today.  I’m going to talk a little about my new novella, THE BREAK-IN now available from Dreamspinner Press. In it, one of the main characters (besides the two men that fall in love) is a robot cat named Jeepers.

You might ask, why build a robot cat when you can just own a real cat–if you like cats at all. There’s a huge percentage of people that are dog lovers or just don’t like pets in general, on top of the pure cat haters.

But Jeepers, who looks like a black and white tuxedo cat, is more than just a companion in my story,  THE BREAK-IN. He’s got several jobs.

He’s Forbes’s confidant, privy to his innermost thoughts via his journals on the house network. Jeepers handles security for Forbes’s house and laboratory. He’s also an inadvertant matchmaker, as well–it’s Jeepers that recognizes the younger version of Forbes’s lover, Oliver.

And he has one more function–Jeepers is the story McGuffin. McGuffins have a long literary history and I couldn’t resist creating a cute one with little white paws.

How does his McGuffin role play into the plot of THE BREAK-IN? You’ll just have read it to find out. Until then, here’s an excerpt:

Blurb: Ten years ago, roboticist Forbes Pohle received a visit from time-traveler Oliver Lennox. “Wait for me,” Oliver said. Now a decade has come and gone, and Oliver has returned. However, Forbes never dreamed Oliver would reappear as the point man for a gang of technology thieves breaking into his lab. He finds the younger Oliver just as sexy and even more annoying; still, he must convince him their happily-ever-after is meant to be—but he only has the time it takes his robotic cat Jeepers to thwart the thieves to do it. After waiting so long, he could lose everything in the span of seconds.

  1. Hi Aidee, I love the idea of a robot cat and your Jeepers looks just like my tuxedo kitty “Molly”. I have enjoyed following your blog tour.

  2. Sounds great. I have a severe cat allergy so a robotic cat would be awesome, the extra things that Jeepers does would just be a bonus. Thanks for the fun blog hop Aidee!

    1. So glad you enjoyed it. I know I’d love a Jeepers that took care of things around the house! If anyone tried a home invasion he’d come in mighty handy, too.

  3. Hi Aidee, sadly the last post of tour 🙁 And we learn a little more about Jeepers the robotic guard cat and a cute little MacGuffin for your book 🙂 The literary & film industry are very fond of MacGuffins’s, or plot devices, and I think Hitchcock may have been the coin its use in the film 39 Steps, as a plot device whose actual nature is not important to the story or another use is a red herring to the story.

Thank you for a great giveaway and I hope you have not minded all my ramblings during the various posts 🙂

  4. I like the idea of robot cats. Jeeper seems like such an awesome character and I kind of wish I had a robot cat after hearing all the amazing things Jeeper can do.

    1. Jeepers is amazing! However, he is overfond of the Frank Sinatra version of Jeepers Creepers (because he’s sure Frank is singing just to him) and he sneaks it into the house playlist more times than is strictly random chance.

  5. I’m with you! I love the idea of a robo-cat. I’m more of a dog girl, but a fluffy, smart, no allergy kitty sounds kind of fabulous! Your novella sounds great, Aidee!

    1. Thanks, Lane! They actually make no allergy real cats, but they still have to eat and have a litter box. A robot would be a lot more convenient.
