Yes, it’s true! Out in the Deep is live two days early! Derek and Gabe’s story is first up in my sports themed novella series, Out in College. This is a enemies to friends story set in a SoCal university. Derek and Gabe are water polo players who’ve known and played against each other for years. But when Derek finds out Gabe is transferring, he’s not happy at all. Sure, Gabe is an Olympic caliber talent but he’s too cocky to be a good fit on the team. Or maybe there’s something else at play… Gabe’s presence brings out a side of Derek that he’s done his best to hide for years. He’s not sure he’s equipped to deal with his emotional and physical response to his new teammate but there’s something about Gabe that makes him want to try. Even if he does push him out in the deep. * sigh…
I’m truly enjoying writing this series. It’s close to home for me on a few fronts. The location, the sport (2 of my 3 kids played) and my oldest son’s struggle to come out. The youthful voice of uncertainty and hope is a powerful one. I can’t tell you how inspired I am by the real life stories of young athletes who are determined to be themselves and live their best possible lives. They make the future seem very bright and hopeful indeed.
